Magdel Combrinck

PhD, Pr.Sci. Nat

Magdel studied Exploration Geophysics at the University of Pretoria, culminating in a PhD on the modeling of Time Domain electromagnetic data.  She has been involved in groundwater exploration, mineral exploration (zinc, copper, platinum and gold) and engineering geophysics since 1996. She lectured at University of Pretoria for four years and have spent another four and a half years processing and interpreting VTEM data for Geotech Airborne Limited.

Since 1997 she has presented more than 20 papers at international conferences and has gained an international reputation as an expert on the interpretation of time domain electromagnetic data.

Willem Botha  (1945-2014)

Willem passed away on May 24, 2014.  His legacy lives on in the many students he inspired while teaching at the University of Pretoria.

Willem obtained his MS (Advisor: G.V. Keller) and PhD (Advisor: A. Kaufman) at the Colorado School of mines in 1980, specializing in electrical and electromagnetic methods. After 4 years as senior geophysicist in Canada, he was appointed as full professor at the University of Pretoria, where he spent 16 years in developing and running the Geophysics Division in the Department of Geology.

He has been involved in mineral (zinc, copper, uranium, iron ore, heavy mineral sands, coal, diamonds, platinum and gold) and groundwater exploration as well as engineering geophysics throughout his career. He has been involved in projects throughout Africa, the US and Canada, Turkey, Guyana and Madagascar. After retirement at the University, he was appointed as manager of geophysics at Kumba Iron Ore. Since 2007 he has been working as an independent consultant, specialising in the interpretation of airborne geophysical data.
